EWR-HNL nonstop not operating next summer (Summer 2024)?

Just received sched notification that my nonstop flight EWR-HNL-EWR now one stop via west coast ….redeployment 767 elsewhere? Still see IAD on the books for Saturdays at least (late Jun-early Jul) were my dates. Thoughts ? Thought that was a popular route..🤔

Too early to tell? The route is indeed quite popular, but more so during winter months. UA was struggling with this route this summer as well: https://simpleflying.com/united-airl...port-honolulu/

IIRC, the issues this summer were more directly related to UA not timing the completion of Polaris retrofits on the 764 in time, resulting in then being short airframes that could operate the route. That said, I’m not sure what would prevent UA from operating a 772 on the route, which they did (and I flew) in the winter months. I know Hawaii is a little less popular of a destination for Americans during the summer (given there are lots of other warm-weather options), but I would think there is enough demand to sustain at least 3x weekly nonstop during the summer, whether on a 764 or some other widebody.

FWIW, IAD-HNL remains on the schedule at 1x weekly (on Saturdays in both directions) through the summer.

Maybe ORD-HNL can go to double daily to service people originating in NE if EWR-HNL and IAD-HNL aren't working.

It might be popular but considering its a leisure market with Delta and Hawaiian also having non-stops it's probably low yielding. Even after UA has effectively left the non-stop market flights are ~$600 RT

They definitely get higher fares up front, but since UA isn't planning on having many more widebodies in the fleet for next summer, I figure they want the plane for summer international travel season.

Or - UA buys HA

1) Move HA's HNL-JFK to HNL-EWR (currently Airbus, but HA's got some Dreamliners coming).
2) Spin off interisland service to shake off that issue
3) Re-gain large HNL hub
4) ...and makes some idiot living on Honolulu Harbor really happy EWR-HNL nonstop not operating next summer (Summer 2024)? - FlyerTalk Forums (20)

Maybe just moving seats around. As someone stated IAH is going 2x about the exact time this stops. seems like the best guess.

People are paying a premium in the winter but summer people have alot more time and probably ARE willing to connect to save a penny. Ie i bet they get alot less people willing to pay a premium in the summer, so it goes. United is using data more than ever and can see exactly what makes money. People in the seats doesn't mean its making money if they are not willing to pay a significant premium to overfly so many United Hubs. Its about making money , not what has people in the seas

Also as a reference using great circle general routing. EWR-HNL is literally 1 mile shorter than EWR-ORD-HNL so you are literally overflying hubs. If they are not getting a significant premium people are willing to pay for a N/S they should cut the route. Also NYC/BOS-HNL has gotten quite crowded these days. There was a time when United was the only airline in Northeast-HNL now Delta and Hawaiian are all over it. They are probably not getting the premiums they used to get for the N/S in summer

hoping this is just seasonal. i usually plan a LAX stopover westbound to see friends, but connecting on the way back to EWR generally involves walking through a connecting hub at a miserable hour. i'll deal with HA's abysmal CS to fly home N/S, or maybe give DL a shot.

IIRC, in order for the route to be flown by a 772, doesn't it have to be an ER variant? i thought the HD birds don't have the range westbound.

EWR-HNL Nonstop removed from schedule

Effective 14-April-24, UA 363 EWR-HNL, and 362 HNL-EWR are removed from the schedule. Any idea what's going on there? If I'm correct, the only remaining Polaris/PE plane to HNL is the ORD routing,.

This is old news. Plenty of seat capacity to HNL. Aircraft makes more money to other areas in the summer.

Polaris/PE to HNL is a waste of resources.
